A great initiative by the Government of India for the potential early detection of coronavirus outbreaks in cities & suburbs. Arogya Setu is an application which collects information from citizens to produce demographic base insights on COVID-19.
This application is certainly helpful in understanding the impact of the Coronavirus on the health of the people during this pandemic. From early self-detection of symptoms to education on safety guidelines, this application is playing a crucial role. We are hopeful that people will install this application, despite potential concerns regarding privacy.
The Coronavirus is a cold-blooded silent killer and disrupts the very fabric of the economy. Unfortunately, until today, there was no mechanism in place to access the magnitude of the situation. The effects on the stock market only reflect an exoskeleton of how devastating it is for the people at the bottom of the pyramid. People making a daily wage are among the first ones to take the hit, as there are no laws which provide job security for them.
Today when private companies are having to engage in massive layoffs and salary cuts, employees are suffering in silence, as there is no one to listen to their pleas. It’s a difficult time for everyone, COVID 19 does not discriminate.
Business owners are suffering, as many of their activities have been restricted by the unavailability of resources. Lockdown and government regulations are meant to slow down the virus spread but they are unable to provide a road map as to how we can extricate ourselves from this situation. The level of pain being felt by the people who are impacted by this pandemic is immense. They are uncertain about their future & are unaware of what to do.
What if people are unable to envision their future?
This subversive thought could end up giving birth to chaos & anarchy. Considering the population in India, we are unaware of how long people will remain calm. So far, people have been cooperative in these adverse times. Most are following the guidelines provided to them by the government. That being said, we are sitting on a ticking time bomb that will not give us much time to prepare.
People are still in the dark because of the uncertainty in society. A severe lack of transparency in the system makes it even harder for people. They want to know how they will be able to pay their bills.
How can we ensure trust among the people?
We can ensure peace if the people can be assured justice. This is possible if we can create a transparent system, that can help people who are facing economic challenges amid the lockdown. Arogya Setu can emerge as a win-win, not only for identifying problem areas but also reaching out and understanding what people expect as a resolution.
We can use this application as a base to collect data using surveys. A collective voice can be deciphered by analysing responses and requests by the people.
We can also link this application with ADHAAR to have more authentic data collection. We have seen that digital courtrooms have become a reality. We need reforms to put the government in check and have accountability in place. Truth must prevail and we the people should be on the controlling side, rather than a few politically biased minds, working to safeguard their positions.
